Types Of Tea

From delicate white leaves to robust black brews, the world of tea offers a wide range of flavors, aromas, and traditions. Each type is crafted using unique processing methods that shape its taste, caffeine level, and health benefits. Explore the main varieties below to discover their distinct character and ideal brewing temperatures.

White Tea

Delicate and minimally processed, white tea is made from the youngest leaves and buds, resulting in a light, sweet flavor with subtle floral notes. It’s rich in antioxidants and naturally low in caffeine, making it perfect for a gentle energy lift.
Brew Temperature: 75–85 °C (167–185 °F)
Steep Time: 2–4 minutes

Green Tea

Lightly oxidized and quickly heated after harvest, green tea maintains its fresh, grassy taste and bright green color. Known for its high antioxidant content, it’s refreshing and slightly vegetal in flavor.
Brew Temperature: 70–85 °C (158–185 °F)
Steep Time: 2–3 minutes

Oolong Tea

Partially oxidized, oolong tea bridges the gap between green and black teas, offering complex flavors that can be floral, fruity, or toasty. Multiple infusions reveal evolving taste notes.
Brew Temperature: 85–95 °C (185–203 °F)
Steep Time: 3–5 minutes

Herbal Tea

Made from herbs, flowers, fruits, and spices rather than tea leaves, herbal infusions are naturally caffeine-free. Flavors range from calming chamomile to zesty peppermint.
Brew Temperature: 95–100 °C (203–212 °F)
Steep Time: 5–7 minutes

Pu-erh Tea

Aged and fermented, Pu-erh develops earthy, rich, and sometimes sweet flavors. It’s prized for its smoothness and digestive benefits, improving with age like fine wine.
Brew Temperature: 90–100 °C (194–212 °F)
Steep Time: 3–5 minutes (can be re-steeped many times)

Black Tea

Fully oxidized for a bold, robust flavor, black tea ranges from malty and sweet to smoky and brisk. It contains more caffeine than other teas, offering a strong, energizing cup that pairs well with milk or lemon.
Brew Temperature: 90–100 °C (194–212 °F)
Steep Time: 3–5 minutes
